yesterday we had our monthly appointment with dr. matthews.
we had to take wyatt's tubes out 10 days before we were "supposed to" because he had a terrible summer cold. when he has a cold, the drainage goes in and out of his palate, up through his nose, etc. it is awful. therefore, he can't keep his tubes in because they tickle his sinuses, he sneezes uncontrollably, the tape under his nose gets soaked with nose drainage and it is just a mess.
jack told me that i would have to tell dr. matthews at the appointment....DUH. which i was going to do anyway because i feel like i can never tell that man a lie!
anyway, he looked at his nose cartilage and scar and stepped back and said "tubes need to go back in and he needs to go on a wheat free diet." we are already dairy free because of dr. matthews.
he said the scar is puffy and therefore dragging his nostril down and making it smaller.
he believes diet has made this happen. SO, i have to listen to the man.
i have to admit, i was disappointed. i have loved seeing his face for 15 days. that's all i have had. 15 days in 4 months.
i knew it was going to be hard on him this time around.
here he is this morning after 30 minutes of eyes watering, sneezing left and right and just grabbing my neck for a hug. it was awful. i have had to change the tape once already because his tears have wet the tape making it peel off. as for how long the tape stays on? i don't know.
his palate surgery will be done before OCTOBER 22. no official date yet.
as for the food.......
confession: we eat processed food. GASP!! HOW COULD SHE??? ;) i shouldn't be ashamed because i am healthy, but some things are processed. i love an animal cracker...or 60.
not everything of course, but a "no wheat diet" made me freak a litttle. see, i like veggies and chicken, jack only likes red meat, lawton wants kid stuff and wyatt has to have soft pick up foods because he is still learning. i can't physically cook for 4 people. i would have to up my meds.
first thing i did was go to the farmers market and get a TON of veggies to steam. then i called my friend katherine who knows all about eating very clean and lives dairy free and almost wheat free diet as do her children. she made me feel so much better and is going to take me to the store to help me come up with recipes, etc.
then i got excited. we are going to change our life. i am going to eat my way through the processed stuff that we have (not wyatt) and gradually bring in the wheat free to our household. lawton will eat what i give him and jack will have to too. he can eat red meat with all the other things. no more boxed cinnamon waffles for the boys. (which they love!!) i HAVE to do this for wyatt. i need to be smart about this. thing is, I HATE COOKING. i am going to vow to take some time sundays now to steam, cook and prepare things for the week. think about our meals.
BUT: i will NOT go off the edge. i can't. i want to enjoy restaurants, enjoy my candy....we will do everything we can to abide by this diet, BUT we have to live too.
i think i can, i think i can, i think i can!
if you know me, i eat to live, not live to eat. could care less about food. it doesn't excite me in the least bit. maybe now i can get excited after eating a few of these "wheat free" things knowing i am doing our bodies some good.
right here is my kind of meal i LOVE veggies. BUT: wyatt woke up at 1am screaming. he was STARVING. and dammit so was i!! i eat in the middle of the night EVERY NIGHT. hopefully i can figure out some recipes fast because we are hungry over here.
so again, we are down that roller coaster.....i know sunday at the fundraiser i will go up again ;)
side note: i handed dr. matthews the money we have already raised...$3,400 as we were wrapping up the appointment. he had no clue it was coming and got so choked up. he gave me a hug and said "this is so wonderful" with tears in his eyes. a very special moment to witness. thank you to everyone who is and has been a part of this with us!
I have a wheat/gluten allergy and have been gluten free for over 5 years now. Please let me know if you need help or recipes...or I can just bring you some goodies over. I refused to give anything up!
ReplyDeleteplease help!! Katherine culp is taking me to whole foods this morning to help me and show me some things to buy and I bought a wheat free cookbook.....I am excited to change things up a bit but also intimidated!
DeleteHappened to click over to your blog today. You are going through so much, and I hope it helps to know that random people on the web feel for you and are sending good thoughts your way. Wyatt is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI noticed you mentioned the boys love waffles. Would the Vans brand work? They have them at Whole Foods (and many other grocery stores now, too). They have a variety that is wheat/dairy/egg/nut free, and they're not half bad! They SAVED us when my oldest was little and he was allergic to everything. I know it's not entirely "clean," but a little dairy-free syrup on those waffles, and my son was a pretty happy guy.
hey erin! thank you for reading and encouraging me....it means a lot!! more than you know ;)) I did get the vans and he LOVES them!! I bought 2 boxes last week and we have already gone through 1.5. I think they will be a staple over here ;) any other bfast suggestions?? I am open to anything!!
DeleteYou probably know all of this already from gluten-free friends, but just in case any of it is helpful... Not sure if bread/toast is soft enough for Wyatt, but for the rest of you, I've heard that the Udi's brand is hands-down the best for gluten-free/wheat-free bread. And Trader Joe's has a brown rice fusili pasta that you almost can't tell isn't regular pasta! We loved the WholeSoy & Co. yogurt (at whole foods and some other healthy-ish grocery stores) better than any other soy product we tried - My son ate this every single day, and even I liked several of the flavors fairly well. Again, maybe not soft enough for Wyatt yet, but we also really like Bell & Evans chicken nuggets for kid-friendly food that seems fairly "clean" (whole foods and many groceries), and they have a gluten-free variety.
