week one

we survived!

once we brought wyatt home, we had no idea what we were in for. how was lawton going to react having this new baby in his home? were we going to be able to function without any sleep? lawton LOVES wyatt. what a blessing!! he wants to hold him (for 2 seconds, but hey, it counts), he gets excited when he opens his eyes, and last night, even wanted baby wyatt to come in bed and read stories with him. this was a picture of our first night home and he was just so excited!! when my friend allan found out that we were pregnant, she said that i was doing the best thing i ever could for lawton and she was right ;)

 see wyatt? here my chick hicks! and thank you CARS...you have saved us! lawton is OBSESSED. knows every character, wants to take them everywhere (meaning all 20. not kidding. in the bath, outside, in the car, everywhere) he goes and can play alone for hours with them.

 here is my little monkey man. wyatt has the longest arms and legs and the biggest hands and feet! he is going to be a big boy! check out those fingers!! he isn't even supposed to be here yet!

 we had wyatt's first dr appointment 2 days after we got home. he was born at 6.13 and was 6.8 when we left the hospital. not bad! but, he was down to 6.3 two days later. to say that i was worried is an understatement. i have been worried about his weight from the day i started researching about clefts. as a mother, this is my goal for him. get him  healthy and strong. we were doing what the hospital told us, but it wasn't enough. so, our wonderful dr told us to try the haberman feeder (a different bottle) and go up to 2 ounces every 2 hours and come back monday after the weekend.

 now, getting a newborn to wake up isn't easy. cold cloths, tapping his feet, we did whatever it took and by monday he was 6.8! then we went back friday and he was birth weight!! high fives all around!

now, feeding is NOT easy. i am basically strapped to my pump every 3-4 hours and feed him every 2 hours which takes 30 minutes. i have to concentrate so hard to press the bottle when he gulps, know his rythem, so that he won't choke. i have to burp him more often and have found that if i hold him up to my chest for about 20 minutes after a feeding, he will burp again. a long process to say the least. last week he spit up and really got choked up. scared me to death...i cried the rest of the afternoon and just thought, how will i ever leave his side? when we will get this down? how can i handle these episodes with ease and not fear? one day....

 our pediatrician told us to try this paci if he was fussy in between feedings. lawton never liked this one, but wyatt sure does! poor thing can't keep it in though which makes for a VERY long night for jack and myself. it pops in and out and we end up spending 2 hours trying keep this thing in. one day he will be able to hold it himself -- don't be deceived - it looks like he can hold it here, but he is tricking you!

sunday night my friend elizabeth  (click on her name and see her work!) came over and took pictures of sweet wyatt. you see, she got here at 7pm and babies should be asleep right? not wyatt, his eyes pop open at night...little night owl ;) elizabeth spent 2 hours capturing sweet wyatt and lawton and there are even a few pictures of their very tired parents ;) thank you elizabeth for coming over and capturing these special moments of my little family! we can't wait to see all of them:)

thank you to everyone for offering to keep lawton, bring us meals, go to the store, farmers market, clean the house, etc for me. i have the best family and friends a girl could dream of.

thank you for being patient with me and i ask that that continue. we have a bit of a road ahead of us and right now it is hard for me to find the time to email back, text back and even talk on the phone. one day i will be able to feed wyatt and talk at the same time but for now, i am still a beginner...

bring it on, i was the mother this baby boy was destined for and i can do it...even with a few tears now and then.
