picking a pediatrician can be so much fun.
i remember "interviewing" eastover peds and loving them. feeling so comfortable and in such good hands. about a year later mary ann cross joined eastover and now lawton's doctor and a great friend. she is having a baby 10 days before wyatt, so exciting! it is so nice to see her, give her a hug catch up for 5 minutes, then on to the appointment. it is also nice to cry to her if i am panicked, etc. again, i feel lucky. thing is, she is the ONLY doctor i ever want to see.
now, with little wyatt. i had heard from several people that there is a pediatrician in town that has twins and one was born with a cleft lip and palate. in the past 2 weeks, i have been thinking about her a lot. something told me that i needed to at least meet with her.
so, today, jack and i went to Arboretum Pediatrics.
Now, charlotte is a big city. i grew up going to the arboretum...it was close to my house. now, not so much. a good 20 minute drive. eastover is basically down the road.
enter panic: what if i need to get there quickly? what if, what if, what if.
breathe.
well, she was amazing. i cried. a few times actually. she told me about her son. she told me that he was born a little over 5 pounds and after he learned to eat, he was the champion of the two. he was chunkier than the other!!i have put this pressure on myself to make wyatt a big baby. when people tell me my belly is "small" my legs, arms and butt are not, i don't like it. i want him huge. a little weight was lifted today hearing that. some babies are put back in the hospital because they lose too much weight, BUT they will learn, as will he. she said i will need to "choke it down him". oh jeez. BUT, she will show me.
i also asked about the sleeping situation. she also went to dr matthews for surgery and he says sleep them on their bellies because they gag sleeping on their backs, which she says is true. i didn't like this. neither did she. so, she slept him on one side one night and the other the next. i will try this and to be honest, if i have to sleep with him on my chest until he is 6 months, i will. i can sleep when he is one right? oh jeez again.
she also told us her sons name was jack.(insert heart here) that he had surgery at 15 months to close the lip and palate, that he has had 4 surgeries (he is 7), that he has been in speech therapy once a week from 18 months to 5 years old. that he has had 6 sets of tubes. none of this scared me. she showed me pictures of a beautiful boy.
if she can do it. so can i. if jack can do it, so can wyatt. jack also had bi-lateral and wyatt has uni-lateral.
point is- the doctors there were young, fresh and KNOW about clefts. she has many cleft patients because of what she personally has been through. i feel good like we are in good hands.
isn't life funny? i am going to have 2 pediatricians. i never thought that would be the case. i am going to learn from someone who has BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. i can cry to someone who knows EXACTLY what i am going through. i can vent frustrations, triumphs, the good and bad and KNOW, she understands.
amazing. i am lucky.
lucky to keep mary ann for lawton and lucky to have dr. sullivan for wyatt.
it was a good day ;)
Brooke, it's so great to catch up on all this news. I feel so awful for not checking in. My blogging days being behind me, I have become so lax with reading all my favourite blogs. I'm so sorry! I am so relieved and comforted that you have found medical specialists that you feel so connected to. What a gift! Your boys are in good hands, mama xoxo
ReplyDeleteSo glad the right people have been introduced at the right time. God's watching over your family! I love your attitude and your dedication as such a loving, natural mother. You rock, Brooke! Thanks for letting us in on a precious time and experience.
