Memorial Day '11

every year for memorial day, we go to jack's parents lake house in va. emily (jack's mom) told me that this year was going to be hard because i wouldn't be able to take my eyes off lawton on the dock and that he would have to wear a life jacket at all times. well, that life jacket took some getting used to....the first one we tried was too heavy, because once we put it on, he toppled backwards (think the kid in the snowsuit in a Christmas story), the other had swimmies which were attached and that didn't go well either. finally, we found an old one that worked. and yes, emily was right, i stuck to him like everywhere he went. i told jack that i sat down for maaaybe 5 minutes on the dock the whole weekend...

SO, back to the weekend. saturday we got there and went on a long boat ride that afternoon, which lawton loved. it was his first! his cousins emily and will were there along with their friends riley and charlie, so he was very entertained.

SUNDAY was another story. we noticed sunday morning that he was breathing a bit heavily. by 1, he was wheezing and breathing very rapidly. we rushed over to the urgent care and he had to get a breathing treatment. i was scared to be honest....you just don't mess around with breathing. he did great during the treatment and they gave him a steroid to use for 5 days. we were told to watch him and if it got any worse to go to the ER.

needless to say, once he went down for the night,i went to the dock, called my mom and bawled. being a first time mom, you get scared. you don't know what is going on, what you should do, you just have to trust your gut and do your best. i didn't want to have to drive an hour to get to the ER if we needed to, i wanted a dr sleeping at my house....right there if we needed them. i was worried about the "what-ifs". etc. my mom said to me that i was doing the best that i could and that this is what being a parent is about. you never stop worrying about your kids. so, we went to urgent care, did the best we could and watched him. we got through the night and his breathing was fine...

but he kid won't let me out of his sight, which makes for an exhausted mommy. i would walk to the other end of the room and he would cry and come looking for me. he won't let jack hold him at all. i am going to look at this "stage" positively and soak up this "mommy moment" because the next time i turn around, he is going to be 3 and want to do everything with daddy.

the weekend was a bit hard and scary but i am so thankful for a wonderful family that is so supportive and helpful....love you!!

follow up dr appt today, so hopefully everything is a-ok!
